Raleigh sits in an unusual spot for roofing. It is far enough inland that hurricanes are not the coastal event people picture, but close enough that their remnants still arrive with real wind and a lot of rain. And an enormous share of the housing here went up in the same couple of decades, which means a lot of roofs in this city are reaching the end of their service life at roughly the same time. Here is what a Raleigh homeowner actually needs to understand before calling anyone.
Pine litter is the failure mode nobody warns you about
The Triangle is loblolly and longleaf pine country, and mature pines shed needles more or less continuously rather than in one tidy autumn drop. Those needles do not blow off a roof the way broad leaves do. They wedge into valleys, pack against the up-slope side of chimneys and skylights, mat into gutters, and sit there holding moisture against the roof surface long after the rain has stopped.
That is the quiet way a lot of Raleigh roofs fail. The shingles on the open field of the roof may be in perfectly reasonable shape while a valley that has been damp for years is rotting the decking underneath. Hurricanes reach Raleigh as wind and water, not storm surge

Do I really need to clear pine needles off my roof?

Pine needles mat together and hold moisture against the roof surface instead of shedding the way leaves do, and a valley that stays damp for years can rot the decking underneath while the rest of the roof still looks fine. There are black streaks on one side of my roof. Does that mean it is failing?
